I am a candidate, not because I want to be a Selectman, rather I feel an obligation. This has caused some inner turmoil, but I have decided I need to contribute my thoughts and efforts. We are presently experiencing the collapse of what I have come to call the “credit-card economy”: Twenty or so years of instant gratification of “wants” to the extent that much public and private debt is owed for things that no longer exist or are greatly devalued. A lot of what the taxpayers of Georgetown have to pay for is imposed from above. For a while the State has sent local aid to help pay for these financial obligations. That aid is now considerably reduced and, it seems, will continue to be for a while due to the economy. A number of new and increased taxes are under consideration at State level. Presumably some of that is intended for local aid. But that is not a sure thing, and it’s our own money, less handling, they’d be giving us. As Selectman, I propose to work with the others to provide the Town’s needs at reasonable cost, hopefully with some left over to provide for some wanted improvements. All this while holding the line on local taxes, hopefully allowing our residents to balance their own budgets.
