Want to join the "Georgetown Whine Line?" or the "Political talk line?" or the "Computer Repair line?" or the "Flowers and Veggies line?"  Well, send us your request. The list, originally started and owned by Rich Coco is still runs threads of Georgetown interest, and have spawned many would-be other google groups in town (liz).  FriendsofLonnie_ @gogglegroups.com originally started out as a collection of supporters of Lonnie Brennan's Selectman election campaign. It has evolved [devolved] into a general free-for-all about all things Georgetown, and "list" contains many non-friends. It's quite the howl, and it's quite a community of sharing (and yes, opinion and gossip).  Venture forth if you are interested or brave.  click here to send us an e-mail to get on the list

Letter from former Selectboard Candidate:

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me. Your confidence in me and your support is greatly appreciated.   I also would like to congratulate those candidates who won the Selectman seats.  I wish all of them the best of luck going forward during their terms as Selectman.   More importantly, though, I wanted to share what I learned from my “campaign” experience.

I certainly gained an understanding about all my fellow candidates and their different views and perspectives related to Georgetown.  But what took me by surprise was not related to any of the candidates…instead I was surprised by the voters.  When I first set out to run for Selectman I understood that there where generally two different ideologies, regarding Georgetown politics, within the town.  I felt that the ideology that garnered the most voters (the majority) would determine who would win a selectman seat and ultimately the “will of the people” would be represented.  What became clear to me, however, is that the numbers did not support this assumption.

There are roughly 5,793 registered voters in town.  From reviewing the poll results it looks as though about 1,300 people came out to vote.  That means that about 22% of the town’s registered voters made key decisions for 100% of the residents.  That compares to about 54% voting in the most recent national election.  And that to me was a surprise…an eye opener. I asked myself how the majority of the people can be appropriately represented if only a small percentage of the people vote.  I hope we all agree that this is not the best use of a democracy.  And please don’t think that I am admonishing anyone who did not get a chance to vote.  I myself have not always been as engaged as I should have.  I have learned that these local elections are just as important as any other election…and may even have a more pronounced effect on our day to day lives.
For instance I noticed at the town meeting that major articles related to the future of our town where only voted on by less than 200 people.  Once again, key issues and direction for our town decided by a minority (about 5%) of the people.

So I decided that I personally needed to get more involved.  And I don’t need to hold a local office position or serve on a board to do so.  By understanding the articles in the town warrants and the candidates up for local offices, I can contribute an informed vote.  The new and existing candidates will be doing a lot of work to guide and lead our town.  We must support them through the process and that means learning and voting.  I struggle with the notion that so few people are setting direction for so many.  I hope you feel the same way and encourage neighbors and friends to get to the polls on the next Election Day.
